Future Risk: Impact of Medical Cannabis on the Workplace

One of the collective goals of workers’ compensation is that in ten years, we do not want to be discussing the cannabis crisis. How do we take the lessons learned from the opioid crisis and apply those to the appropriate management of cannabis if it is legalized at the federal level? The introduction of cannabis into mainstream medical practice is unprecedented in modern times. Physicians in most states now may recommend the use of cannabis for a wide range of symptoms for everything from anorexia to “any other illness for which marijuana provides relief.” In this session, a risk manager, a medical director and a clinical pharmacist will discuss a claims strategy for when cannabis is involved. Portions of this strategy include: 1) Put on the brakes; cannabis is not a cure all. 2) Pay attention to the guidelines; look to evidence-based medicine. 3) Look at first-line treatments initially, especially with regard to weaning from opioids. 4) Pay attention to the federal regulation; cannabis is still an illegal drug.
