Grand Ballroom 7A

While continuing the trend of offering workers’ compensation topics and presentations to address current events and the interests of our audience, the Multi-State Breakout will cover national and state-specific workers’ compensation issues in both a thought provoking and entertaining format this year. The program will include a presentation by a national expert and industry leader in managing workers’ compensation claims, who is also an expert on identifying, hiring, and retaining talent, particularly diverse and millennial candidates as is necessary to maintain the continuity of the workers’ compensation industry. The program will also include the individual state breakout sessions, but will feature a new format this year where attendees will be taken “to the movies” to better learn and under- stand common issues affecting compensability of workers’ compensation claims in numerous jurisdictions.

The program will begin with a lively and motivating presentation concerning the recruitment, retention and development of insurance industry employees, particularly Millennials or Next-Gen candidates. Our keynote speaker will provide an interactive presentation concerning what must be done to empower the next generation of great insurance industry leaders so as to maintain continuity of the workers’ compensation industry.

Before and after a WCDI-provided lunch, the very unique and extremely popular state-specific breakout presentations will begin. The presentations will take place in three rooms, each room consisting of a panel of five different states, with each session lasting one hour and forty minutes, thereby allowing participants to hear from up to ten jurisdictions. This year, the format will incorporate the use of popular movie clips to teach and facilitate fun and lively discussion concerning common issues of compensability across multiple jurisdictions. Handout materials will be available for each jurisdiction, and the topics covered will include course and scope of employment, idiopathic falls, the coming and going rule, the ingress and egress rule, lunchtime injuries, mental trauma claims, and will allow for questions and answers.

The day will culminate with our closing session where prizes will be given to the persons attending the breakout sessions. Importantly, the 2019 multi-state workers’ compensation laws, rules, regulations and forms from each of our jurisdictions will be distributed to all attendees during this closing session. This is an invaluable resource tool for any employer or claims handler conducting business in more than one of our states. This booklet will also include easy reference to rules and form filing deadlines.
