WCI 2023 Sneak Peek: Occupational Medicine Breakout

This year’s Occupational Medicine Breakout offers a 2-hour deep-dive into overdose and its impact on society and the workplace. Almost daily news accounts of overdoses from around the nation have again put a spotlight on prescription and illicit substance abuse. Our panel of clinicians and law enforcement will discuss:

  • The opioid crisis evolution and its current state.
  • F.D.A. indications, C.D.C. warnings, and overdose statistics.
  • The impact on U.S. life expectancy.
  • What is fentanyl and its potency.
  • Resources that are available for people of all ages and ethnicities regarding medication usage, mitigation, and safe practices.
  • The impact of drug traffickers and nationwide trends related to fentanyl overdoses.
  • What is Naloxone (Narcan) and the immediate effects it can have to save a life in the case of a fentanyl overdose.
  • How the Overdose Mapping and Application Program (ODMAP) provides near real-time suspected overdose surveillance data to support public safety and public health efforts in mobilizing an immediate response to a sudden increase or spike in overdose events.

“Overdose is the number one leading cause of accidental deaths in adults, with two thirds of those being due to opioids. The National Safety Council reports that 75% of employers acknowledge that opioids have had an impact on their business, but only 17% report being prepared to address this. Our panel of experts will review the multifactorial basis of the current crisis along with providing strategies for employers to mitigate the impact of this epidemic.”Dr. Cori Repp, Breakout Organizer
